King Quilt Cover

Having a king size bed can often turn into an expense when looking for bedding. One thing to consider is getting a quilt for the bed and using a cover over the quilt. These are also known as duvet covers (the European name) or simply quilt covers. The great thing about them is you don’t have to wash heavy bedding in the winter months, just the quilt cover, which can be laundered the same way as your sheets. For many, the thought of trying to wash a king size quilt is a nightmare entailing a visit to the Laundromat, not so with a quilt cover though.

A king quilt cover can be made in cotton for lighter use, or heavier fabric for winter use. Choosing a reversible cover will generally give you one side solid and the other with a pattern, both incorporating one main color theme to match your décor. If you have never used a quilt cover before, imagine how easy it is to put a pillowslip on a pillow; it’s the same premise for your king quilt cover. The king can be a little tricky to handle due to the size; the easiest way is to lay the king quilt cover directly on your bed, open the end of the cover and insert the quilt into the cover, give it a good shake and close.

On the foot end of the cover you will either have a zipper or sometimes snaps or buttons to keep your king cover from coming off, both work well although the quilt can sometimes work its way out through the gaps between the snaps. Shaking the quilt every morning will help to keep it in position inside the quilt cover.

One advantage of having this type of bedding is that you can buy more than one cover for your king quilt, enabling you to change the theme of your bedroom very easily. You can also change from summer cover to winter cover, or even Christmas theme to a spring theme. If you had to have that quantity of regular comforters you’d never have enough room to store them all, but because quilt covers are just like two sheets storage is not a problem.

Make your own quilt cover

If you like to save money and can find king size sheets on sale then try making your own cheap king quilt cover by sewing sheets together; you will need a sewing machine to tackle this. If you cannot insert a zipper just sew a few ties onto the quilt, tie them up into bows and it will take on a country look. Match it with some pillow shams and you have a whole new look to your room, and have probably saved yourself some money as an added bonus.

Buying a king quilt cover

Quilt covers in general are quite expensive and a king cover will be upwards of $50 and can go to $200 upwards. Much of this will be dependent on the cotton and the thread count; Egyptian cotton is considered one of the best, being extremely soft with a very high thread count. Whether it is piped around the edges and made of one piece of material, as opposed to several joined together pieces, will all have an effect on the price you will pay. Any store that sells bedding should sell quilt covers. Online shopping will give you the biggest choice and you should be able to get great bargains and find cheap king quilt covers for sale. Give consideration to this type of bedding, the versatility that it will give you to change your décor as often as you wish will make it more than worth it.
